5 Weird Traits of INFJs

INFJs can be perceived as weird or eccentric. It is estimated that they make up about 1% of the population, so their personality type is uncommon – Maybe this is one of the reasons for their reserved nature. Maybe they are not as open as they could be because they are people with creative personalities who really do see the world differently, and they know this will make other people confused.

5. INFJs absorb all kinds of emotional pain.

This is not just what can be directly experienced by them but the emotional pain that they see happening in the world every single day. They have a deep understanding of the darker side of life. This constant state of awareness might seem great at the beginning, but over time it becomes exhausting.

On a positive note, the constant reminders of all the things that could have gone wrong in their life make them appreciate what they have now instead of always reaching for something new. This perspective changes how they view the world. Since there are many people who are suffering, it inspires them to not complain about trivial things anymore.

4. Many INFJs struggle living with guilt.

Living a normal life may make them feel guilty. Guilt for the money they spend on luxuries or unnecessary things because so many people can't afford basic necessities, like food, or having somewhere to live; Guilt that they can afford to get a proper education, yet so many other people can’t.

Not having these serious problems in their lives makes them feel responsible for the lives of other people, so they may spend their efforts on improving the lives of others, or, and this is a terrible thing, preventing them from being happy since they feel it’s unfair if they can have a normal life and others can’t.

3. INFJs are mysterious.

They have many layers to their personality and their behaviors, therefore it can be challenging even for them to understand their own complexity. They are feelers, but they are capable of using their minds and hearts.

Their dominant Introverted Intuition can be both a blessing and a curse to live with because many of their predictions come true. They are also stubborn when it comes to changing themselves. They want to listen to their Intuition no matter what.

Their secondary function, Extroverted Feeling, causes them to want to help others, so they feel great when they are able to. They are really good at understanding other peoples’ points of view, which is what enables them to read everyone like an open book.

2. INFJs have an artsy side.

Artists generally have an unusual or weird aura about them. They are often eccentric people. Art at its core favors this weirdness. INFJs also give off this vibe. You may notice that INFJs often try to integrate their creativity into any endeavor. Although INFJs have a lot of artistic talent, their other “cousin”, the INFPs, are more likely to be better artists.

INFPs focus their attention all on the characteristics and key events that compose the essentials of human existence. INFJs are more organized and more interested in problem-solving and making things better for other people, so they are less likely to indulge in art just for the art's sake.

1. INFJs develop a passion for “strange” things which most people wouldn't understand, but it's these things which can speak to their expansive minds.

INFJs search for meaning in everything. They do not pay attention to superficial aspects of life or things that seem empty to them. INFJs’ opinions and different approach to looking at things causes others to disregard them and deem them as weird. With their complex psyche, they enjoy things that others may find dark or depressing.

It’s due to the fact that they see depth and beauty in things that other people overlook. These traits can be considered “weird” by society. INFJs are no stranger to being called weird even as children due to their unpredictable nature.

But isn’t weirdness exactly what the world needs to thrive? The progression and innovation of society require us all to be a bit weirder! And frankly speaking, once people grow older or start to mature, their tastes and preferences change. Maybe at that time, looking at INFJs’ preferences would make a lot more sense.

A personal experience by Gordo G

It surprises people to find out that I am an introvert, because they assume I am extroverted by the way I act. I try to be aware of how I act on the surface, but what's happening on the inside is quite different. I used to think that everyone had good intentions, and I'm not sure why.

At some point, my gut feeling proved me wrong. It’s hard for me to fathom that some people try to use me for their own needs because I always direct my thoughts and feelings towards those whom I'm with. It's easy for me to read people because I am very socially aware.

I've been asked by many people, “How do you know exactly how I feel?” It’s hard for people to understand, but I seem to have an innate understanding of a person's character regardless of logic or reason. We're also accused of being too hard on people.

But honestly, many people do not hold themselves to a standard, which I think is the main cause of their failures both on a personal and professional level. Whenever I am in a new space or with new people, I feel a bit of anxiety. The night before my first day of work, I had trouble sleeping. My mind would just race all night long and I couldn't sleep.

That’s most likely because I’m reluctant to change, and I find it difficult to adjust to a new environment or a new situation. If you put us on the spot, we tend to react like a deer in front of the headlights, but interestingly enough, we can still make great public speakers and storytellers. I struggle a lot when I’m being forced to do something or go somewhere.

I'll need some time before I'm ready to make the commitment, so please don't pressure me! Usually, it’s because I need some time to myself and socializing wasn't in the plans. Because of this, most people think they’ve made a mistake or they’ve upset me.

A long time ago, I learned that if you don't open your mouth, no one can judge you. So most of the time I stay quiet, but this could be a reason why people think we're weird. Society often avoids non-conformists and quiet people, while narcissists get all the attention.

So, if you think I'm weird, no worries, I won't be offended. By nature, everyone with Extroverted or Introverted Intuition as dominant functions, tend to be quirky! We tend to be lone wolves and don’t like to follow society’s rules, which might make us stand out oddly, but this is often because we are guided by our own interests rather than what society expects.
